Chris Cornell ended the last efficiency of his life with a song about death

Those are the opening lines to the last tune Chris Cornell ever sang on phase. It was a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “In My Time of Dying.”

Cornell and his band Soundgarden have actually covered the song prior to and they did it again to close out the program at Detroit’s Fox Theater on Wednesday. Just hours later on, Cornell was found dead. He was 52.

“It was a long slow slide and after that a long slow healing, but there was self-discovery too,” Cornell told the Mirror in 2012 about his battle with alcoholism. He stated having a musical identity, and helpful band members and buddies, made all of the difference.

“I was very lucky I had the ability to see that and not take it for given. It assisted me climb out of the mire. I saw how tough it might be,” he said.

Fittingly, the last song Cornell ever released was called “The Guarantee.” It ends with this refrain:
