PETALUMA, Calif.– A 10-year-old mutt called Quasi Modo, whose back abnormality left him a bit hunchbacked, is the winner of this year’s World’s Ugliest Dog contest.
The pit bull-Dutch shepherd mix and his owner took the $1,500 prize Friday night, besting 25 other canines competing in the contest that praises imperfection, organizers said.
Quasi Modo was abandoned at an animal shelter prior to being embraced by a vet in Loxahatchee, Florida, according to his bio published on the contest’s site.
“My look can be a little disturbing to some (I have had grown guys get on top of their vehicles to obtain far from me due to the fact that they thought I was a hyena or Tasmanian devil) once they being familiar with me I win them over with my bubbly character,” his bio stated.
2 Chinese crested and Chihuahua mixes called Sweepee Rambo and Frodo took the second- and third-place rewards, respectively.
An 8-year-old Chihuahua called Valuable received the “spirit award,” honoring a pet dog and owner who have gotten rid of challenges and/or are providing service to the community. Precious, who is blind in one eye, is trained to keep track of smells related to low blood sugar levels and alert her owner, a disabled veteran, of the issue, her bio stated.
The contest, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California, is in its 27th year.
The pet dogs are scored by a three-judge panel in numerous classifications, consisting of unique or uncommon qualities, personality and natural ugliness.
