Las Vegas is still the country’s capital when it concerns magic programs, so it was actually just a matter of time prior to “Masters of Illusion”– a hit TV series on the CW Network and a touring production featuring a rotating cast of veteran and increasing star magicians– made its way to the Strip. The show lands onstage in the Jubilee Theater at Bally’s beginning on Dec. 6, a minimal engagement that could potentially become something more permanent.
“It’s going to be the touring program on steroids,” says co-executive producer David Martin, who’s been developing the Vegas variation of “Masters of Illusion” for at least a year while taking it on the roadway for nearly 200 shows and preserving the TV program for four years. Martin is going for a longer run at Bally’s. “I would state right now it’s open-ended.”
If you have not seen it, “Masters of Illusion” is hectic, ever-changing, and layered with different, nuanced styles of magic, techniques and stunts. “It’s not your dad’s magic show,” says co-executive manufacturer Gay Blackstone, former president of the Academy of Wonderful Arts and widow of phase magician Harry Blackstone Jr. “It’s for the current period. It has a little the Cirque du Soleil sensation, a great deal of comedy, a great deal of huge magic, and it’s for any ages however it’s definitely not a kids’s show by any means. It moves extremely rapidly and there’s absolutely nothing like a host included.”
“And there are no tuxedos,” adds Martin.
The initial ensemble cast is set with Tommy Wind, Jason Bird, Farrell Dillon, Greg Gleason and Chris Randall, however other performers will turn through. Because each magician brings their own design– some are comedic, some concentrate on big illusions, some in close-up magic– the show will naturally develop, which the manufacturers hope will cultivate a strong following with Las Vegas locals as well as Strip visitors.
Using up the well known area of the Jubilee Theater is also a huge offer. “It’s such a gorgeous theater, and it will be much more gorgeous since we’ll have the Television Set which is very recognizable,” states Blackstone. “We’re taking an unbelievable theater and going another level up, and I am so fired up about it since I think this is the most beautiful theater on the Strip. Working there is going to be magnificent.”
