POWELL, Ohio– The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is commemorating World Elephant Day by announcing that one of its Asian elephant mommies is expecting.

Zoo officials said Saturday that 31-year-old Phoebe is expecting her 4th calf and her 3rd in Columbus, where she came to reside in 2002. Authorities say she remains in her 3rd trimester and is anticipated to give birth in December. Elephant pregnancies last about 22 months.

The identity of the child’s daddy is a secret that will be fixed with DNA after Phoebe’s calf is born. Phoebe was inseminated with sperm from Columbus Zoo partner Hank and an elephant from another zoo. She also was reproduced by Hank.

Phoebe’s previous 2 deliveries in 2004 and 2009 are the only 2 Asian elephants to be born at Columbus Zoo.
