(Meredith/AP)– A guy implicated of fatally shooting a Massachusetts policeman with the officer’s own weapon and an innocent spectator is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on murder charges.
Emanuel Lopes, 20, will either be arraigned at his health center bedside or in court in connection with the deaths of Weymouth officer Michael Chesna, a six-year veteran of the force, and an unknown female, who was struck by stray bullets in a neighboring home. It was not immediately clear if Lopes had an attorney who might comment on the charges.
Weymouth authorities were responding to a report of a person driving erratically Sunday early morning when they found a crashed BMW, said Norfolk District Lawyer Michael Morrissey.
Chesna was attempting to find the driver of the automobile, Morrissey said when he spotted Lopes presumably vandalizing a house. That’s when Lopes struck Chesna in the head with a rock. Chesna was up to the ground, and Lopes took the officer’s gun and repeatedly shot him in the head and chest, Morrissey stated.
Another officer who had arrived at the scene shot Lopes in the leg. Lopes then ran away and fired shots into a nearby home, eliminating a lady inside, Morrissey stated. Her name was not right away launched.
“This is a dreadful day for Weymouth and for Massachusetts. Our hearts are quite with the surviving households of these victims,” Morrissey said.
Weymouth Authorities Chief Richard Grimes described Chesna as a 42-year-old Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran who leaves a wife and two children. Chesna was from Weymouth and graduated in 1994 from Weymouth High School.
“I worked with Mike Chesna 6 years ago tomorrow,” Grimes stated.
Grimes stated he had actually spoken with Chesna’s mom and she told him that her son joined the military “to unlock to get in this job.”
“He always had a kind word and an excellent attitude … we very much valued his service to the Weymouth Police Department,” stated Grimes.
Chesna’s body was carried from the hospital to the state medical examiner’s office in Boston. Lots of law enforcement officer saluted the lorry bring his body as it passed by.
Weymouth is located around 16 miles south of Boston on what is known as the South Coast.
