(Davidson County Sheriff’s Office). LEXINGTON, N.C. (AP)– A North Carolina couple is charged with felony child abuse after maggots were found in the diaper of an 18-month-old child, one of 7 kids in their care, authorities stated. The Dispatch of Lexington reports authorities also charged 25-year-old Jamie Leigh Hiatt and 26-year-old Michael Patrick McKnight of Lexington with misdemeanor child abuse. They were jailed on $ 100,000 bond each.

It’s not known if they have lawyers. According to Lexington cops, officers carrying out a welfare check at a home last Friday found 7 children all under the age of 6 that were malnourished and dirty. Capt. Michael Hunt said officers came across an overwhelming odor of feces and urine when they entered into the home, and they described the living conditions as “extremely bad.”

Hunt stated the officers called emergency personnel and the Department of Social Providers.

Authorities stated 18-month-old twins were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. One was discovered to have maggots in his diaper. They’re in reasonable condition and are anticipated to be launched to DSS custody and placed with proper relative or foster parents.

A 1-year-old kid was taken to Wake Forest Baptist-Lexington Medical Center for treatment of malnutrition before being released to a relative, police said.

The other children, ages 3, 4, 5 and 6, were gotten rid of from the house and put in foster care or with other loved ones. An 8-year-old who was living at your house had been just recently sticking with their father, according to authorities.
