Kate Spade was born Katherine Brosnahan and matured in Kansas City, Missouri.
She was working as a devices editor at Mademoiselle magazine when she introduced her company with partner Andy in their New york city apartment or condo in 1993. She began the company based on 6 shapes of bags that she believed every working female required. It produced a smash.
“I grew up in the Midwest, where you have to have it (a style item) due to the fact that you like it, not because you’re supposed to have it,” she informed the AP in 2004. “For our consumers, fashion is in the ideal location in their life. It’s an accessory, not an obsession.”
From the original blocky handbags, she broadened into shoes, travel luggage and other accessories, in addition to a house line, stationery, and 3 books. Spade won several awards from the Council of Style Designers of America and was called a “giant of style” by Home Beautiful magazine.
“As an accessory, an excellent bag that takes the clothing somewhere else is interesting,” she informed the AP in a 2000 interview.
She walked away from the business in 2007, a year after it was obtained from the Neiman Marcus Group for $125 million by the company then called Liz Claiborne Inc.
. Coach, now referred to as Tapestry, purchased the Kate Spade brand last year for $2.4 billion, looking for to widen its appeal.
On the other hand, Spade and her husband– bro of comic David Spade– started a new purse company a few years back, Frances Valentine. And she altered her name to Katherine Noel Frances Valentine Brosnahan Spade.
“I will always remember the first Kate Spade bag I got for Christmas in college,” Jenna Bush Hager tweeted. “She was a pioneer. Her life and death are a suggestion that discomfort doesn’t discriminate. Sending out love to her family.”
