It was “such a great night” for singer-songwriter Taylor Swift at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Swift’s new single is titled “Bad Blood,” the star-studded video for which premiered at the top of the ABC telecast, but there is definitely no bad blood with Signboard, as the white-pantsuit-clad songstress swept the awards with 8 wins, consisting of top artist, top female artist and leading Billboard 200 album for “1989.”
Her caring sweetheart, leading global and Las Vegas resident headliner DJ Calvin Harris, who sat alongside her in the arena, likewise had a win, for top dance/electronic artist, while Swift’s ex, Harry Styles, and his band One Instructions, minus the recently departed Zayn Malik, took home 2 statues.
The awards’ other numerous winners Sunday night: Sam Smith (3), absent due to vocal-chord surgery; Pharrell Williams (3); Iggy Azalea (3); Hozier (2); John Legend (2), whose wife, cover girl Chrissy Teigen, was the fun awards co-host alongside actor and rap artist Ludacris; and Meghan Trainor (2).
Summarizing a night of solid efficiencies, predicable winners and boos for Kanye West and his sisters-in-law Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner at the awards from inside the arena:
Van Halen with frontman David Lee Roth, “Panama”: They kicked off the awards. They rocked. Big time. With lots of pyro.
Fall Out Child, “Uma Thurman”: With female dancers worn Thurman’s white shirt and black pants in “Pulp Fiction.” Outstanding. Wiz Khalifa appears in a male variation of the outfit. Awesome. Apprehend up/ketchup!
Nick Jonas, “Envious”: This JoBro is hot. He’s hot. His voice is hot. His performance is hot. And his partner, 2012 Miss USA turned Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, is hot. Hot.
Trainor and Legend, “I’m Gon na Love You”: One of the very best efficiencies of the night, and Legend’s falsetto is wonderful.
Mariah Carey, “Vision of Love” and brand-new single “Infinity”: The new Caesars Palace headliner ends “Infinity” with a super-high and fierce note. Thank goodness she’s recuperated from her bronchitis.
Khalifa, Charlie Puth and Lindsey Stirling, “See You Again” from “Furious 7”: Likewise among the best efficiencies of the night and an exceptionally emotional tribute to the late “The Quick & & the Furious” actor Paul Walker.
Tunes from the hit ABC series “Empire.” Should I be enjoying this show?
Hozier, “Take Me to Church”: I still love this song. Amen.
Little Big Town with Faith Hill, “Lady Crush”: The only country efficiency of the night. Powerhouse vocals from the ladies.
Pitbull and Chris Brown, “Fun”: Jennifer Lopez presents the men and their “summertime anthem.” It’s a much-appreciated uptempo efficiency.
Ed Sheeran, “Bloodstream:” He slays with his acoustic guitar and is particularly likable live vs. radio.
Nicki Minaj and David Guetta, “Hey Mom” and “The Night Is Still Young”: Another much-appreciated energetic performance and one of the best– and raciest– of the evening, with Minaj touching herself.
Tori Kelly, “Nobody Love”: The Kia star to see is fascinating and an awards’ emphasize.
Basic Minds, “Do not You (Forget About Me)”: Starlet Molly Ringwald presents the No. 1 hit from the late director John Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club” from Three Decade ago, and they eliminate it. Drag that “The Breakfast Club” co-stars Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall and Judd Nelson aren’t onstage with Ringwald.
Kelly Clarkson, “Invincible”: The vocalist reminds why she won Period 1 of “American Idol.”
Think of Dragons, “Stand By Me”: A great homage by our home town boys to Ben E. King, who passed away April 30. Luda also paid tribute to B.B. King, who died Thursday here in Las Vegas, earlier throughout the awards.
Kanye West, “All Day” and “Black Skinhead”: This was my very first time seeing the rap artist, and he was electrifying– after he arised from the nonstop pyro that obscured him for the very first third of the awards’ last efficiency. He supposedly was censored for a complete minute by TV authorities.
CHRISSY TEIGEN’S FASHION
The Sports Illustrated Swimwear Edition model didn’t put on a one-piece or swimwear, but she sizzled in red, black and black-and-white ensembles that, of course, highlighted her stunning body.
Teigen and Swift noticeably blended the scripts on the TelePrompTer. You go, girls.
For One Instructions, naturally, even after three hours. Followed by Five Seconds of Summer season and Sheeran. Women will be girls.
It was apparently typical knowledge that Britney Spears and Azalea’s world-premiere performance of their new single “Pretty Girls” would be tape-recorded and at Axis at Planet Hollywood, the home of Spears’ resident show “Britney: Piece of Me,” but the arena crowd was audibly shocked and disappointed. The efficiency unsurprisingly was lip-synced, but Spears looked wonderful.
FINEST ACCEPTANCE SPEECH
Smith via video. He’s recovering from vocal-chord surgical treatment and accepts via huge notecards with nods to Swift, Nicki Minaj and Sheeran.
MOST POPULAR WINNER
Trainor upsets Swift with “All About That Bass” for leading Hot 100 song, tears up throughout her acceptance speech, thanks her mother and gets the loudest applause of the night.
Were the Jenner sis and brother-in-law West booed? If so, why?
