. This edition of the Rewind starts with unhappiness as the Las Vegas Strip and the international culinary community are grieving a remarkable loss: “Chef of the Century” Joël Robuchon died Monday in Geneva after a long battle with cancer; he was 73. One of the world’s most awarded chefs and restaurateurs, Robuchon was a frequent visitor in Las Vegas after he opened two dining establishments at MGM Grand in 2006, the city’s only Michelin three-star winner Joël Robuchon and the surrounding L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon.

Whether in the kitchen area working alongside his chef teams or at a cooking occasion where fans lined up to see him, you might constantly tell that he brought an enormous amount of joy to others. His culinary genius will continue to survive on in the minds and hearts of all he touched.”

I met with Robuchon several times and interviewed him at length 5 years earlier, asking the master about international patterns in cuisine and his hospitality viewpoint. He informed me he loved hanging out in Las Vegas since of its diverse visitors: “Possibly more in Las Vegas than anywhere else on the planet I travel, there is a melting pot of customers, actually a stunning worldwide base. 11 dead, almost 70 wounded in weekend violence in Chicago

In this Aug. 5, 2018, photo, cops investigate the scene where numerous individuals were shot in Chicago.

Monday, Aug. 6, 2018|3:11 p.m.

CHICAGO– At least 11 individuals were shot to death and about 70 injured in a weekend burst of violence in Chicago that instantly became a political concern when President Donald Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani, blamed the carnage on longtime Democratic rule in the city.

Authorities on Monday associated the lots of shootings to gangs, the prohibited circulation of weapons and sweltering August heat that drew more individuals outside.

The victims ranged in age from 11 to 63, inning accordance with cops. One teenage lady died after being shot in the face. A teenage young boy was fatally shot riding a bike Sunday afternoon. Other shootings happened at a block celebration and a funeral service.

Even for Chicagoans all too familiar with violence in parts of the city, the weekend stuck out. By method of contrast, at least seven individuals were killed and 32 injured during the long Memorial Day weekend, the Chicago Tribune reported.

“Our souls are strained,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel stated. “It is undesirable to happen in any neighborhood of Chicago. We are a better city.”

Echoing comments that Trump himself has made repeatedly about Chicago, Giuliani blamed Emanuel– President Barack Obama’s White Home chief of personnel– and years of “one party Democratic guideline” in a series of tweets on Sunday and Monday.

The previous New York mayor likewise tweeted his support for Chicago mayoral prospect and previous Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, describing him as “Jerry” and calling him a “policing genius.”

McCarthy plans to run next February versus Emanuel, who fired McCarthy in 2015 after the release of dashcam video showing a white law enforcement officer eliminate a black teenager by shooting him 16 times.

Misspelling Emanuel’s last name, Giuliani tweeted: “He can do a lot much better than Mayor Emmanuel who is messing while Chicago burns.” Giuliani likewise wrongly claimed that Chicago had “63 murders this weekend.”

The mayor had no immediate talk about Giuliani’s attacks.

The majority of the shootings happened in poor areas on the West and South Sides where gangs are entrenched, said Cops Superintendent Eddie Johnson, standing beside the mayor.

Johnson noted that murders in the city are down by around 20 percent from in 2015. But he stated gang members and others jailed on gun charges aren’t dealt with harshly enough.

“It is the very same individuals who are shooting,” he said. “This is a small subset of people who believe they can play by their own rules since they continue to get a slap on the wrist when we apprehend them.”

Johnson said at the morning press conference there had been no arrests in any of the weekend shootings.

Days prior to the attacks, some 200 protesters marched through a well-to-do North Side community and briefly closed Lake Coast Drive, requiring more resources to stem violence in poor locations.

Tio Hardiman, among the organizers of last week’s rally, said members of the black neighborhood have to take the effort by moderating truces in between gangs.

The violence peaked early Sunday, consisting of one shooting on the South Side that injured 8 individuals.

Security was increased over the weekend at the outdoor Lollapalooza music festival in downtown Chicago, which drew tens of countless youths. However Johnson said the officers were on overtime and weren’t moved from their regular beats in high-crime locations.

City officials say brand-new crime-fighting procedures over recent years have helped bring homicide numbers down, including greater reliance on innovation that can instantly show where gunfire originated from. Improved intelligence-gathering has likewise enabled cops to rapidly dispatch officers to hotspots where gang violence has actually just struck assist thwart revenge attacks.

Chicago ended 2017 with 650 murders, below 771 the year before. Though the drop was significant, in 2015’s overall went beyond the combined number of killings in New York and Los Angeles, the two U.S. cities larger than Chicago.

In a declaration, McCarthy called himself a “proud Democrat” and distanced himself from Giuliani’s views and “the misdirected, divisive tone and policies of Donald Trump.”

McCarthy stated the blame for the bloodshed “lies squarely with Rahm Emanuel’s weak management and stopped working policies,” not with Chicago Democrats as a whole.

Unlike me, they got their picture taken with Barry after the program, undoubtedly real Fanilows.

Best Choices: Gwen Stefani, Lifehouse, Conkarah and more for your Las Vegas weekend

Todd Stefani This weekend is your last possibility to catch Gwen Stefani at World Hollywood up until December.

Friday, July 20, 2018|2 a.m.

Whether you’re into pop rock, smooth soul or righteous reggae, different musical tastes are well represented this weekend all over the Vegas Valley. There’s even a wonderful experience waiting for Sunday afternoon in Summerlin.

LIFEHOUSE The M Resort’s summertime concert series moves poolside Friday night with 17-year-old rock outfit Lifehouse, understood for hit single “Hanging by a Minute” and for offering more than 15 million records worldwide. You do not have to hit the Strip to discover a great outside show this weekend. July 20, details at < a href="

I wrapped an extremely busy show-going week (7 various shows in 5 nights on and off the Strip, thank you very much) by signing in on “Opium,” Spiegelworld’s ever-changing, space-themed comedy range program at the Cosmopolitan. While the current version included many favorite acts from the first viewing– the woman in the bubble, the Chihuahua-balancing astronaut, the spaceship’s cruise director “Leslie,” the hula-hooping “Scottie” and a super-sassy sword swallower– it moves much quicker now and is thick with action, having actually trimmed a number of sections of the story. There were a couple of new acts, too, including a hot circus-style whip routine with a major surprise. My guess is “Opium” could be a perpetually unfinished piece, continuously tweaking its vibrant team to promote return gos to. It stays riotous and extremely different from other show on the Strip.

NBA Summertime League wraps up today at the Thomas & & Mack Center and while dozens of hoops stars checked out Las Vegas to support their current groups and future colleagues, there remains no bigger NBA celebrity than LeBron James, who made one of his very first public looks because signing with the L.A. Lakers on Sunday when his new team topped the Detroit Pistons’ summertime squad.

The Mirage’s resident crooner Matt Goss released his appealing new single “Red Flares” over the weekend. Recorded at the Studio at the Palms and available on iTunes, Amazon Music and Spotify, the pop track seems like the next advancement for Goss, the former lead singer of U.K. group Bros whose launching solo album remained on the English charts for 84 weeks. Anticipate more new music from Goss this summer season in addition to his stylish programs at 1 Oak Bar at the Mirage, where he has 6 more nights this month.

Spotted at El Dorado Cantina, among our preferred late-night (and anytime) haunts on Saturday night: New SLS funny resident Eddie Griffin celebrating his 50th birthday with his family, his Funny Come down tour mate George Lopez and Michael Jackson tribute artist Jalles Franca. You can catch Griffin at the Sayers Club Mondays through Wednesdays, Lopez at the Mirage at the end of August and Franca at the Stratosphere’s “MJ Live” show.

Tickets are on sale now at any Caesars Entertainment ticket office or 866-320-9763.

If you were wondering what’s next at the Las Vegas Celebration Grounds, the MGM Resorts-owned plot at the Strip and Sahara where Rock in Rio was kept in 2015, there are 2 answers. First, the yearly iHeartRadio Music Festival will host its daytime stage show there on September 22 (while the rest of iHeart is inside T-Mobile Arena). Then, the first Martha Stewart Wine & & Food Experience takes control of, also during the day, on October 13, featuring a “Grand Tasting” tasting experience, chefs and restaurateurs, seminars and presentations and more. The food fest is presented by MGM and USA Today.

Finally, some fantastic news if you live in or around Summerlin, like I do: The incredible Bromberg bros are set to open Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya at the Red Rock Resort later this year. Bruce and Eric Bromberg made their Vegas debut with Blue Ribbon Sushi at the Cosmopolitan, which has considering that been transformed into the stellar Blue Ribbon Brasserie, and they likewise run 2 regional Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken joints in addition to the kitchen area at Brooklyn Bowl. The brand-new Red Rock area is another major culinary rating for Summerlin and Station Gambling Establishments.
