Winds cause havoc for boat adrift near Lake Mead Marina

Tuesday, April 18, 2017|7 p.m.

Strong winds triggered a triple-decker, paddlewheel boat that had actually lost power to wander at Lake Mead National Entertainment Location this afternoon, according to the National forest Service.

One team member from 163 individuals aboard the Desert Princess vessel suffered small injuries, park service spokeswoman Christie Vanover stated in a news release.

Teams were called about 12:30 p.m. to the location near the Las Vegas Boat Harbor and Lake Mead Marina, Vanover stated. The boat was pushed onto a barrier where about 60 passengers offloaded onto outdoor patio boats.

That’s when the wind shifted and caused the boat to drift, but teams had the ability to restart it and lead it back to safety where the rest of the guests were unloaded, Vanover stated.

At the time of the occurrence, gusts at Lake Mead had reached 30 mph, Vanover stated.

Comparable conditions in the Las Vegas Valley, where gusts reached up to 50 mph this afternoon, triggered officials to issue a dust advisory set to end tonight, inning accordance with the National Weather Service.

The location from Blue Diamond Roadway to west Summerlin saw light showers– the only rainfall reported in the valley, meteorologist Chris Outler said.

Wednesday’s require a high temperature of 84 degrees and mainly sunny conditions, Outler said.
