It’s difficult to think there could be any awards left for Tony Bennett to win after 70 years of captivating the world. However in November, the 91-year-old legend will get the Gershwin Reward from the Library of Congress, ending up being the very first vocalist to receive the honor that traditionally has been offered to composers.
“I didn’t understand about that part,” Bennett informed me from New york city a couple of weeks back. “I’m very honored and thrilled about it. You understand, I have actually had a great life. The general public has been terrific to me through the years. And I love doing exactly what I do.”
Bennett is back in Las Vegas, one of his preferred cities to perform, for a series of programs at the Wynn’s Encore Theater beginning Wednesday.
Your production at Encore Theater is called “The very best is Yet to Come.” Is this something you’ve done in other places or is it exclusively for Wynn? It’s strictly for Las Vegas.
Your child Antonia will be there, too. What’s it want to share the phase with her? She opens the program for me and she’s doing a terrific task. She’s just a fantastic person and I like carrying out with her, and I like being close to my family.
You have actually performed in Las Vegas through every possible age of home entertainment in this city, from prior to the Strip was the Strip. I’ve had some great days in Las Vegas, memorable times. The last time I played there they named the street after me! I was very honored. I enjoy doing it, I like remaining in Las Vegas since you encounter many performers you enjoy. It’s an excellent feeling to be part of the entire scene there.
Are you still painting? It’s something I do every day. I’m always finding out something from observing nature and seeing how fantastic it is and aiming to give an impression of the method I see it.
Is painting a similar experience like singing, or is it something you do because it’s different? I believe I’m still carrying out since I love doing what I do and it’s always so interesting to me still. I constantly feel like it’s the very first time I’m doing something. It’s really exciting at my age to still be going strong and being accepted by the public … I’m very honored they’ve picked me and accepted me, so it’s an adventure.
Are you planning to record more music quickly? Yes, I’m doing another album with Girl Gaga, turning up. [Their collective album Cheek to Cheek was released in 2014.]
What is it about Gaga that makes her such a great collaborator? A great deal of individuals understand her in many different ways, but I accept her as a terrific singer, among the very best I’ve ever heard. And I’m going to attempt to bring that out on the next recording we put together.
Tony Bennett: The Best is Yet to Come will be presented at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas at 8 p.m. November 1, 3, 4, 8, 10 and 11. For tickets and information, check out wynnlasvegas.com.
