Young boy who hugged officer in viral picture among 3 missing out on after lethal crash

(CNN/Meredith)– A Washington family was killed after their SUV plunged 100 feet off a seaside highway in California, landing on its roofing system in the Pacific Ocean, officials said Wednesday.

The bodies of Jennifer and Sarah Hart and three of their 6 children were discovered Monday around the automobile, Mendocino County Constable Tom Allman stated. Their three other children are missing out on.

Amongst the missing kids is 15-year-old Devonte, who made national headings in 2014 when he appeared in a picture taken throughout a Ferguson-related protest in Portland, Oregon. The picture, which went viral, reveals a tearful Devonte hugging a policeman.

“We have every indicator to think that all 6 children remained in there,” Mendocino County Constable Tom Allman stated, appealing for pointers to retrace where the siblings and 2 parents had actually been prior to the lorry was discovered Monday in rocky ocean. “We know that an entire household disappeared and perished during this tragedy.”

The California Highway Patrol got 911 calls Monday about a lorry that discussed the side of Highway 1 in a remote section of Mendocino County, about 180 miles north of San Francisco, Sgt. Erich Paarsch told reporters Wednesday. A passerby occurred to see the SUV at the bottom of the cliff.

Emergency situation responders found the vehicle on its roofing with the 2 females, both 38, inside the automobile, Paarsch said. Outside the automobile, they discovered the bodies of Markis Hart, 19, and Jeremiah Hart and Abigail Hart, both 14.

The household was not wearing safety belt, Mendocino County Constable Tom Allman stated.

Private investigators are still looking for the bodies of Devonte and his sisters Hannah, 16, and Sierra, 12. The sheriff’s workplace is dealing with the Coast Guard to search for the children.

The household was from Woodland, Washington.

On Friday, the state’s Child Protective Solutions had tried to visit the family after the “now deceased children were identified as potential victims of supposed abuse or disregard,” inning accordance with a statement from the Washington State Department of Social and Health Solutions.

CPS attempted to make contact with the household 3 times, on Friday, Monday and Tuesday, but weren’t able to reach them.

“We have actually not made any findings in this examination and we had no prior history with this household. We are dealing with all included law enforcement agencies on their particular examinations,” the department mentioned.

Allman pleaded with the general public for any details about the household’s whereabouts 24 hours before the crash.

“We have no evidence and no reason to think this was a deliberate act,” Allman stated. “If this was an intentional act, I really believe that both between the Highway Patrol and the constable’s workplace we are going to concern that conclusion, and if we pertain to that conclusion you can be ensured that details will be released to the general public.”

The famous image of Devonte from 2014 revealed him with tears streaming down his face as he welcomed a white policeman in the middle of a demonstration over the authorities shooting in Ferguson, Missouri.

He was holding a sign offering “free hugs” when Portland authorities Sgt. Bret Barnum approached and extended his hand because he saw Devonte weeping. Barnum said the two spoke about life, travel and summertime getaways prior to he asked Devonte for a hug.

The sheriff Wednesday stated there is every indication that all 6 children were in the SUV, though he said there is a possibility the 3 missing children could have been left with good friends.

A complicating element is that investigators have no idea when the SUV plunged over the cliff, the sheriff said. The lorry was in the water for a minimum of several hours prior to it was found, he said, based upon the water found inside the SUV and in the wheel well.

The car had to take a trip about 75 to 100 feet on a dirt “turn-out” next to the highway before it went off the edge, he said. The turn-out is a place where automobiles and recreational vehicle can park and people can walk their dogs. There is a dirt berm at the spot but no guardrail.

There were no skid or brake marks, Allman stated. It’s not clear whether the SUV might have rolled or launched over the edge, CHP Sgt. Christopher Dalin said.

The regional constable’s workplace in Clark County browsed the house and said it appeared the household may have been on a short-lived trip because there were lots of valuables inside, along with an animal and some chickens.
